On 3 June 2025, at around 7 p.m., a fire broke out in the Centre for Polymer Engineering and Science (ZKT). The ZKT and the adjacent academy building were immediately evacuated and searched by the fire brigade. There were no injuries. However, there was damage to the building and machinery, as well as significant supply interruptions: a power failure made it necessary to set up emergency operations using a generator. The HVAC system, i.e. heating, air conditioning, ventilation and sanitation, failed completely and the ZKT remained closed from 3 to 13 June 2025.
Renovation and recommissioning
The laboratories of the Institute of Materials Science and Testing of Polymers were particularly affected by the fire. Numerous trades were involved in restoring operations at the WPK – from fire restoration, electrical work and installation to drywall construction, building management systems, scaffolding and several equipment companies. The fire restoration company Belfor alone recorded 4,200 working hours. The recommissioning took place in stages: from September 2025, the laboratories were able to partially resume operations before full operation was restored in October 2025.
Official reopening
The official reopening finally took place on 13 November 2025 – a festive reopening of the laboratories, with musical accompaniment provided by a member of the institute's staff.
In his opening statement, Professor Pinter thanked not only his staff, but also the GTB (Central Services at the Montanuniversität Leoben – Facility Management, Technology and Central Purchasing). It was only through the professional and closely coordinated cooperation between GTB and WPK that such a rapid recommissioning was possible. He also highlighted the Department of Polymer Engineering and Science, the Chair of Mechanical Engineering and the Polymer Competence Center Leoben for their support with urgent testing orders.
The Rectorate celebrated with Vice-Rector Christina Holweg and Vice-Rector Helmut Antrekowitsch. VR Antrekowitsch emphasised the great commitment of all those involved, but was also very pleased and reassured that all emergency measures had worked according to plan and that the Chair was now ‘shining in new splendour’.
