Montanuni opens learning and experience centre

Last week, the Montanuniversität Leoben opened the InnoLab – a new learning and experience centre that brings future technologies to life for young talent. At the InnoLab, school pupils, university students and young innovators can experiment, develop and design in a hands-on environment: from 3D printing, polymer production, recycling and sustainable materials right through to robotics, electronics and sensor technology. The aim is to make STEM education tangible and to provide consistent support every step of the way, from the initial idea to a working prototype.

“With the InnoLab, we are building a bridge between schools, universities and the real world – a place where ideas become reality,” says Peter Moser, Rector of the Montanuniversität Leoben. “We want to inspire young people to take an interest in technology and empower them to play an active role in shaping the solutions to the challenges of our time.”

Programme for schools

From autumn 2026, the InnoLab will also open its doors to schools, offering specially developed programmes for upper-sixth-form students at AHS and BHS. Classes will work hands-on with the latest technology, modern equipment and scientific methods. All formats are led by specialist staff from Montanuniversität Leoben and range from the compact Explorer programme to intensive ‘Deep Dive’ sessions on specific topics; bespoke programmes can be organised on request.

“Teachers are provided with a turnkey solution: safe set-ups, pedagogically structured content and professional support – pupils experiment, build and test with direct practical relevance,” emphasises Markus Ast, Head of the InnoLab.

Students benefit

Students also benefit directly: the InnoLab provides space, state-of-the-art infrastructure and support for practical exercises, project work and Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. This creates a short path from idea to prototype and a secure framework for independent, scientifically sound work. The key areas of focus range from 3D printing, through innovative polymer synthesis and the circular use of materials, to robotics, electronics and sensor technology – always with a focus on using technologies sustainably and responsibly.
