Department Trip to ZaB - Zentrum am Berg

The test and research facility comprises four tunnels, each 400 m long. The Centre at the Mountain consists of two parallel road tunnels and two parallel railway tunnels, which are connected by cross-passages and adits that are faithful to the originals. In total, the entire facility offers around 4 km of underground testing and training areas. In addition to the underground space, the ‘Zentrum am Berg’ also has additional above-ground testing areas for further research projects.

This week, our department outing took us to Eisenerz to visit the Zentrum am Berg (ZAB). During a fascinating guided tour led by Prof. Robert Galler from the Chair of Subsurface Engineering, we gained interesting insights into the underground research and testing facilities and were able to experience the tunnel systems at first hand.

Afterwards, we went for lunch together at the Bohrerschmiede, where we continued our outing in a relaxed atmosphere.

To round off the day, in glorious sunshine, we took an exciting ride on theHauly through the impressive mining area. This allowed us to experience the scale of ore extraction and the region’s mining history first-hand.
